The Newest Hinkle

Even in a taxi, it’s a long ride down from the mountain to arrive at the Veterinarian Teaching Hospital at the National University. Luisa knew the hospital well, because this was not her first rescue. Many dogs owe their lives and happy homes to the work of Luisa Pinzon.

This little puppy, however, may have been the most broken, the most malnourished, the most impossible to save of
all. Finally at the Hospital for Small Animals, the dog was placed on an IV drip of glucose, put in a small cage with a hot water bottle, and given very little chance of survival. So weak was the little sad sack of bones that no thought of an operation to treat the leg could be contemplated until the dog had enough strengh to survive the process.

Not knowing whether it was a male or female, when ask for the dog’s name, for some reason the only name Luisa could think of was Daddy Hinkle. Daddy Hinkle! What a name for a little dying female puppy.

For a month Luisa carried home-cooked broth to the hospital to feed the poor little creature. After a month, Daddy Hinkle, the street urchin of a dog was well enough to have her leg operated on and leave the hospital.

Now, almost seven weeks after being found crying and dying in a cold mountain village in South Bogota, the little Daddy Hinkle is alive and well. She eats like a horse, knows to ask to go outside, and has found paradise in Luisa’s apartment in the Barrio of Quinta Paredes in the middle of Bogota, Colombia.

She still wears a protective bell around her head to keep her from biting her stiches, and she has to have therapy on her leg three times a day to keep it form becoming stiff. Quickly she has adjusted to being one of four females that includes Luisa, Chacha; a rescued poodle, and Micha Luna, the cat.

Daddy Hinkle, whose name has been shortened to La Hinkle, will have all her stiches removed during Easter week and the timing could not be better, for she is a testament that miracles do happen. Look for periodic updates to the life of Miss Daddy Hinkle in future articles.

Last February , on a rainy and, in the montains, a cold day, she stumbled across a stinky, wet bag of skin and bones lying in the street; wimpering with hypothermia, starving to death, and suffering from a broken leg. Luisa wrapped the little brown and white puppy in her leather jacket and hailed a taxi.
